Funnily enough, here at Cheezburger, our company is also moving offices next week. We've been working from the same office for the past three years, and it's time for a physical change. But if you think anyone has been asked to come to the office over the weekend to help with the move, you could not be more wrong.
On the contrary, all the employees have actually been told to work from home on the day of the move, so that the movers can actually do their jobs without us getting in the way. So, this Tuesday, we are all going to pack our personal belongings in a box, leave it in the office, and work from home on Wednesday. By Thursday, we are expected to arrive at the new offices, and all the office supplies will be waiting for us there.
No one is expected to help the company “keep relocation costs reasonable,” it's truly none of our business. And to do so on our free, personal time? That is the point where employees should stand up for themselves and simply refuse to cooperate with these demands.

As chronically online as we are, when reading this tale, we can't help but feel like this is a classic episode of The Office. Although that show was hilarious, we all know that Michael Scott was a toxic boss who ran an office none of us would have wanted to work at. That place was an HR nightmare, with so many workplace violations in each new episode. Sure, it was a funny sitcom, but as an actual office? Hard pass.
Michael Scott is definitely the kind of person who would come up with the brilliant idea of saving money on movers by forcing employees to come to the office on a weekend and do the job themselves. Hopefully, for the employees in this very real scenario, they will not stay employed by a boss like that for long, will do the smart thing, and look for another job.
